Officials in Enoch City, Utah reported Wednesday that eight people, including five children, were found dead with apparent gunshot wounds in a home during a welfare check. Enoch City issued a statement saying there are no suspects and no threat to public safety.
We all know this family; many of us have served with them in the church and community and have gone to school with these individuals, “City Manager Rob Dobson stated at a press conference. Because of this tragedy, “and so right now this community is hurting, they feel lost, they feel sadness and they have a lot of questions, which is understandable.”
The Iron County school district wrote to the parents confirming that all five of their children were enrolled in Iron County schools. Dotson claims the call for the welfare check came in at the police station on Wednesday evening.
Dotson said authorities are not sure of a motivation now. At the time of the press conference, officers were in the home working on a search warrant. Dotson claims law enforcement from Enoch City, Iron County and Cedar City are all working together to solve the case.
In “a day or two or maybe longer,” Dotson said, the public could find additional information about a possible motive. “The most essential thing we can convey is that this community feels guilty and hurt,” he said.
Those involved have “friends, neighbors and relatives who are in pain as a result of this act”. Located in the southwest of the state, close to Zion National Park, is the small town of Enoch, home to 8,000 people.
The community is located about 250 miles from Salt Lake City, making it closer to Las Vegas than the Utah capital city. Dotson claims the town is grieving for the loss of these people. Dotson, who was visibly moved during the press conference, expressed his gratitude for the prayers offered on behalf of the family by people across the country.
It is heartwarming and much appreciated to hear from all over the country how much people care about each other. Utah Governor Spencer Cox tweeted after hearing the news: “Our hearts go out to all affected by this terrible violence.” Remember the people of Enoch in your prayers.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Director of Media Relations, Doug Andersendeclined to comment on whether or not the family was members and whether or not the church was aware of complaints of domestic violence. ABC news has contacted the mayor and police of the city of Enoch for comment.
