Music Row mayor and SiriusXM host Charlie Monk has passed away at the age of 84

According to his family SiriusXM Announces the Passage of Veteran Announcer and Famed “Mayor of Music Row” Charlie Monk at the Age of 84. After a successful career in radio and music publishing, Charlie became a beloved member of the Nashville music scene before joining Sirius Satellite Radio in 2004. For many years he chaired morning programming on Willie’s Roadhouse and weekend interview programming on Prime Country.

Born in Geneva, Alabama, Charlie was elected to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Country Radio Hall of Fame in 2019. In 2021, he was recognized for his “exceptional leadership and dedication to preserving and developing the values ​​and traditions of Country Music” with the Country Music Association’s Joe Talbot Award.

He started in high school at WGEA in his hometown of Geneva, Alabama, then worked shifts at WKRG and WUNI in Mobile, Alabama, and worked at WTBF at Troy University. Since its inception in 1969, he has hosted the CRS’s annual New Faces event.

When Charlie first arrived in Nashville in 1968, he was working for ASCAP and CBS Songs before founding Monk Family Music Group in 1983. He was mayor of Music Row because of the extensive network he built through his positions as an officer and board member for several organizations.

Not only was Charlie a prolific composer who paved the way for artists such as Randy Travis and Kenny Chesney, but whose own tunes have been recorded by the likes of Jimmy Dean, Charley Pride, Jerry Reed, Eddy Arnold and many more. On the same album, he reads some of his own works, including ‘My Wife’ and ‘Andy & Opie Christmas’.
