The smart home company sent out an email to its customers this week stating that system maintenance on Feb. 8 at noon PT will affect any function of the system that depends on the app or website. That includes being able to alert Noonlight, the professional monitoring company Wyze uses for that Sense security systemabout a possible burglary.
Not only will your security system go down, but using Wyze cameras to keep an eye on things at night will keep you awake. Wyze cameras cannot upload video to the cloud or send alerts for motion or other events to the app.
While it’s a good thing Wyze is notifying customers, that’s the downside everyone gets a heads up. It puts a sign that any location using this equipment will be unprotected between these hours, with basically no notice to create a backup plan or take any other precautions depending on your security concerns.
It is also concerning that the professional security that customers have paid for and rely on can be completely disabled for ‘maintenance’. The edge contacted Wyze to ask what you could do if something happened in your home during that time. We’ll update this story if we hear anything.
The full list of services that are unavailable is copied below and you can view it at Wyze’s support page. But in short, the Wyze app will be essentially offline with no rules or automations and no function for arming or disarming your system or locking or unlocking a Wyze lock. You can still use the keypad on the Wyze Lock and Lock Bolt to enter your home, and the fingerprint sensor will work.
And while you can still arm and disarm your Wyze Home Monitoring system with the keypad and any disturbance from contact or motion sensors while it’s powered up, the Wyze Sense Hub will sound an alarm – all you have to do is call the police yourself . Of course, an internet outage can also cause this problem. Wyze doesn’t offer mobile backup in its security system like competitors such as SimpliSafe and Ring.
Plus, it seems there’s little recourse for customers who are understandably frustrated with this turn of events. The companies terms of service stating that its service “may be temporarily suspended without notice” and that you “shall not be entitled to any refunds, credits, discounts or any other compensation for such suspensions.”
