ChatGPT’s capabilities are captivating the industry as enterprises begin to explore its use cases. Some experts have issued warnings about adversaries misusing the tool to increase ransomware attacks – worried it could democratize cybercrime, causing it to increase. The tool is already so powerful that it’s even questioning the future of search engines like Google, which has been the most used spot in the search tools category since 2000. Earlier this week, Google told CNBC that some employees had raised concerns internally about the search giant losing its lead over ChatGPT.
Meanwhile, another competitor in the space, You.com, has opened up its search platform to third-party developers so they can build their own apps for the search results page to integrate more AI capabilities — this includes generative AI, the company noted .
Along with news about improving search engines, the Linux Foundation this week detailed news about its efforts to innovate mapping technology with the formation of the Overture Maps Foundation. The foundation will focus on integrating emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR) into map making as interest in and tools for the metaverse also increase. What this means for Google’s own mapping tool will become apparent in due course. The company has incorporated AR back into its maps feature 2019 and has continued to expand these capabilities ever since.
It also remains to be seen what direction the future of Google’s search engine will take as a result of ChatGPT’s fierce competitiveness. However, Google’s huge areas of focus outside of search were also in the news this week. It debuted the OSV scanner this week in an effort to help developers identify known vulnerabilities — and patches for them — in open-source projects.
The release of OSV-Scanner comes at an opportune time. As we learn more about ChatGPT’s ability to easily create ransomware, many, including IBM researchers, predict that the number of attacks, hackers, and cyber-crime-as-a-service ecosystems will increase by 2023.
Here’s more from our top 5 tech stories of the week:
- Google releases a vulnerability scanner for open source software backed by a community editable database
Google has announced the launch of OSV-Scanner, a free vulnerability scanner designed to give developers access to vulnerability information on open source projects, which is claimed to be the largest community-editable database for open source vulnerabilities.OSV Scanner allows developers to automatically compare code and dependencies against lists of known vulnerabilities and determine if patches or updates are available.
- How ChatGPT can turn anyone into a ransomware and malware threat
Ever since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late November, commentators from all quarters have been concerned about the impact AI-driven content creation will have, particularly in the field of cybersecurity. In fact, many researchers are concerned that generative AI solutions will democratize cybercrime. While security teams can also use ChatGPT for defensive purposes, such as code testing, by lowering the barrier to entry for cyberattacks, the solution has significantly complicated the threat landscape.
- Creating the ultimate smart card with a new card data initiative launched by Linux Foundation
Map data is voluminous and huge; the modern world relies on it not only for navigation, but also for local search, routing, logistics, data visualization and other emerging innovations, including autonomous driving. To help usher in the next era of map building – especially with the dawn of the metaverse, the rise of augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), and the many other platforms and worlds not yet conceived – the Linux Foundation today founding the Overture Maps Foundation.
- As Google weighs in on ChatGPT, You.com enters AI chat
One of the biggest topics driving the hype bonanza since OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT two weeks ago has been: What does this mean for search?You.com, the search engine startup founded in 2020 with a moonshot bid to take on Google, announced today that it has opened its search platform to allow third-party developers and organizations to build their own apps for build the search results page.
This includes generative AI apps, it says, never seen in traditional search engines, using generative AI technology that allows users to generate text (YouWrite), code (YouCode), or images (YouImagine) from plain English — all within the search results page.
