According to a new 2023 US Public Safety Trends Report from Mark43, using insights from a nationwide first responder survey, modern policing requires modern technology. In fact, 86% of first responders want improved access to crime and incident reporting that leverages the reliability, security, and resiliency of cloud software.
And more than half (57%) say their agency would benefit from an integrated platform to streamline their reporting responsibilities.
A central theme woven into the report is that technology plays a critical role in everything a public safety agency does. It must be integrated into all aspects of organizational activity. The technology should not be an add-on or an afterthought, and this realization is a critical step forward for the future of the entire industry.
In 2022, public security agencies began to recognize the great need to move their computer-assisted dispatch (CAD), records management system (RMS), and analytics technology away from an on-premises solution, where physical servers are managed locally. Instead, they are evolving into cloud-native platforms where computing resources such as networks, servers, storage, applications, and services are all in the cloud.
In addition, the pandemic, an increase in weather conditions and cyber-attacks, as well as associated security concerns, have made it increasingly difficult to justify using on-premises systems. The report indicates this is a welcome change, with over 2/3 (68%) of respondents saying they need to go to a physical location, such as a station building or office, to complete required paperwork rather than cloud technology to complete these tasks digitally and from any remote location.
Coincidentally, first responders have accepted the need for cell phones at work. 93% rely on their devices for emergency response software, capturing evidence and connecting with their peers and community.
Overall, this new trend report underscores first responders’ desire that 2023 should be the year we see industry-wide change as the move to cloud-native platforms for public safety organizations accelerates.
Propeller Insights conducted a national online survey of 343 first responders between October 6 and October 18, 2022.
