ManageEngine commissioned Vanson Bourne to conduct a global study to examine the role of IT and how it will continue to evolve in the future of work. The report found that everyone in the enterprise, not just IT, has an interest in how technology is chosen, implemented, configured and used.
Most departments outside of IT – especially quality control (24%) and finance (21%) – use artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML). In addition, 76% in North America agree that their organization encourages non-IT staff to develop their own applications using low/no-code platforms – the highest of all other regions surveyed – with marketing being the top department create their own applications.
Despite the fact that non-IT workers are now more knowledgeable about IT than before the pandemic (76%), business decision-makers believe that lack of training (48%) and basic technical knowledge (47%) are the main barriers to employees when it comes to leveraging available technologies.
IT decision makers (ITDMs) believe that other departments need more technical skills training, especially marketing (52%), finance (45%) and sales (43%). This indicates that these teams may be misusing these technologies and need more IT support to correct the course.

Decentralization of IT can lead to increased collaboration and the benefits can outweigh the drawbacks. 74% of ITDMs in North America stated that their organizations have already successfully decentralized their IT fabric, the highest of all other regions surveyed.
Despite this, nearly all ITDMs surveyed (99%) said their organization faces challenges if they continue to decentralize. Their top three concerns focus on maintaining IT security levels (56%), maintaining quality levels (41%) and the reliability of ongoing support (37%).
Regardless, decision-makers believe that the importance of IT’s role in the business will be more recognized as a result of decentralization (57%), with 89% agreeing that the success of an IT department is directly related with the overall success of the organization.
Methodology
Vanson Bourne conducted this global survey of 3,300 decision makers in IT and other key business functions, with a total of 500 in the US and Canada.
