Ghosting: A supernatural term that we started using regularly around 2015, with a specific reference to romantic relationships. Now firmly entrenched in the culture, pretty much any situation we feel uncomfortable or want to get out of without explanation is one that can be ghosted — including a new job.
According to a recent questionnaire of the 1,000 US-based employees, 84% of job seekers have ghosted an employer or potential employer at least once in the past 18 months. But why?
It turns out that there are a few reasons why you might choose to end communication with a company that has offered you a job. First-time job seekers are more likely to exhibit these behaviors, according to: another survey which found that 31% of new job seekers said they had ghosted an employer during their current search, compared to 12% of experienced professionals.
Today’s hot job market is also fueling the rise of ‘candidate ghosting’: 55% of job seekers said current job availability is the top reason they are more likely to ghost companies now than they would have been before the pandemic . Those who cast a wide net in their job search also exhibit more ghosting behaviour, with 47% of ghosters saying they applied to more than five jobs in the past month, compared to just 31% of those who didn’t spirit.
But will it ever be okay? It seems that job seekers are concerned. Sixty-seven percent of people who would ghost an employer have expressed concerns about the potential negative consequences this could have.
Obviously, no one should be forced to take a job that doesn’t suit them, which is why communication is key. A friendly and polite email or phone call to let a hiring manager know you won’t be making any progress is the way to sort out a situation you’ve handled before by using radio silence. Everyone will know where they stand, and you may get another chance at the same company in the future – when the time is right.
