Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer Tory Lanez (born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson on July 27, 1992) is better known as Tory Lanez. His mixtape Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story, released in August 2013, is largely responsible for his initial success.
Tory Lanez signed a deal with Benny Blanco, whose label Mad Love Records is distributed by Interscope Records, in 2015. On the Billboard Hot 100, the singles “Say It” and “Luv” from Lanez’s debut studio album, I Told You), peaked at position 23 and 19 respectively.

Canadian hip-hop artist Tory Lanez was born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson on July 27, 1992 in Brampton. Tory’s father, Sonstar, is from Barbados, and his mother, Luella, was from Curaçao; she died of a rare condition at the age of 11.
After his mother’s death, Lanez has stated, “At the time, I acted badly because I didn’t have the skills necessary to articulate my feelings effectively. When I started making music, I finally had a way to release all that pent up frustration and anger.”
When Lanez was about four or five years old, his family uprooted and went to Montreal, Quebec. Later they settled in Miami, Florida. Sonstar’s job as a priest and missionary necessitated frequent relocations after Luella’s death. Sonstar uprooted his family after his second marriage to the Peach State.
Hakeem, Tory’s friend, called him “Lanez” because he “likes to chase thrills and run the streets”. Due to his problematic behavior, Tory moved in with his cousin in Queens, New York in 2006. His grandmother in Toronto wouldn’t take care of him, so he moved back in with his aunt.
Lanez said, “I ended up moving downtown with these three guys that I didn’t really know,” he told XXL magazine. Until I was 18, all I did was fight them. I used to fight a lot, and these guys were like my elders. There was no one to help you except yourself.

In July 2020, when police arrived at a home party that had turned violent, they discovered a concealed firearm in Lanez’s car and subsequently arrested him. Broken glass was initially thought to be the cause of the injuries, but Megan eventually revealed it was a gunshot wound and Tory fired the shot.
In October 2020, Lanez was charged with three felonies, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm. A protection order was also filed against him, prohibiting him from having contact with Megan or coming within 100 feet of her.
Tory’s bail was increased from $190,000 to $250,000 when he violated the protective order in August 2021. A number of rappers, including Drake, Jacquees and Joyner Lucas, have been on opposite sides of Lanez’s feuds. Tory and Jacquees reconciled and toured together after their petty feud ended. In April 2017, Lanez gave birth to a son named Kai.

Both the Much Music Video Award for Best Hip-Hop Video (for “Henny in Hand”) and the NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist (for 2019) were presented to Tory.
