A Massachusetts doctor was charged with felony charges this week after prosecutors alleged she stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and assaulted a police officer. On Tuesday, Ashland’s Dr. Jacquelyn Starer was arrested on eight counts, including assaulting a police officer and inciting civil unrest during the U.S. Capitol breach.
The doctor is also accused according to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to illegally break into restricted areas of the property and use physical force there. She is the second Doctor to be detained for her involvement in the Capitol siege. This year, Simone Gold, MD, JD, was sentenced to prison for trespassing during the riot.
In Massachusetts, Starer, 68, is licensed to practice obstetrics/gynecology and addiction medicine. She was a day wage worker at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, but she is no longer there, a Mass General Brigham representative told MedPage Today.
According to the FBI’s criminal indictment, opened in a new tab or window, footage showed Starer at the “Stop the Steal” protest in red attire and a hat with “TRUMP” and the number 45 embroidered on it.
Officials saw the doctor approaching the Capitol through the East Rotunda doors just before 3 p.m. with a group of other rioters. Body camera footage showed Starer assaulting a Capitol police officer after entering the facility and walking toward a group of them.
The complaint stated that the police officer attacked by Starer later told investigators “A blonde woman in a red jacket and helmet hit her on the left side of her head.” The agent was ordered to strike back when Starer attacked him again.
According to court documents, as the rally grew more enraged, police officers tried to prevent them from entering the Capitol. Starer received first aid for her eyes and face after appearing to be struck by a “chemical irritant” that had been used on the protesters, as seen on footage.
After receiving a tip five days after the attack, the FBI began investigating Starer’s role in the Capitol disturbances. According to the complaint, an online tipster informed the prosecution that Starer boasted to a friend that he was “prepared” for the disorder by carrying pepper spray and dressing in a knife-resistant mesh shirt.

Prosecutors asked a colleague of Starer’s to identify the doctor from photos of the July brawl, and the colleague replied, “That’s Jackie.” According to a CBS Boston report opens in a new tab or window, Starer first appeared in court the day after her arrest.
Starer joins nearly 900 other people detained for participating in the march. The DOJ reported nearly two years after the violence at the Capitol. About 300 people have been charged with assaulting or obstructing law enforcement, according to the organization.
Following the House Select Committee to the attacks of January 6 Monday’s vote to report former President Donald Trump for criminal charges to the DOJ, Starer was arrested. An 18-month investigation into the attack on the US Capitol with the vote closed.
