Stranger things is getting a prequel to make the wait for season 5 a little easier – but to watch it, you’ll need to go to London. Netflix announced this today Stranger Things: The First Shadowa play set to premiere at the Phoenix Theater in London’s West End from “late” 2023 that serves as an origin story of sorts.

Stranger things creators will serve as creative producers to the Duffer brothers, while the story is written by Kate Trefry, a writer on the show since season 2. The story follows younger versions of characters like Hopper and Joyce as they deal with the early days of darkness that haunts Hawkins, Indiana. Here’s the official premise:

Hawkins, 1959: An Ordinary Town with Regular Concerns. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister doesn’t take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past are very far reaching.

Other than some Saul Bass-inspired artwork (pictured above), there are no images of the production yet. It also sounds like the play could have some strong story implications, with Netflix saying in the announcement that “this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger things story – and may hold the key to the end. You can register for priority access to tickets here.

The fourth season of Stranger things, which was split into two parts, wrapped up on Netflix last summer. There’s no word yet on when season 5 might debut.
