Spotify is the first to close its live audio app Spotify Live indicated by Music ally (through TechCrunch). In a statement to The edgecompany spokesperson Gayle Gaviola Moreau confirmed that Spotify is “going to discontinue the Spotify Live app,” believing that “it no longer makes sense as a standalone app.”
Instead, Spotify specifies that it will continue to offer live audio in the main Spotify app in limited ways, such as listening parties, which allow paid users to listen to music with friends even if they’re not in the same room.
The edge reached out to Spotify for more information on whether Spotify Live features will still exist in its main audio app, but the company declined to elaborate further. “As the Spotify Live app shuts down completely, we continue to invest, innovate and experiment with new formats for creators and listeners around the world,” said Gaviola Moreau.
The music streaming service first launched the audio-only app in 2021 under the name Greenroom. The company built the app in response to all the hype around social audio app Clubhouse and even acquired live audio service Betty Labs for €57 million (approximately $67.7 million at the time) to help it do just that.
“We believe there is a future for live fan-creator interactions in the Spotify ecosystem; however, based on our experience, it no longer makes sense as a standalone app,” says Gaviola Moreau. “We’ve seen promising results in the artist-centric use case of ‘listening parties’, which we will continue to explore in the future to enable live interactions between artists and fans.”
