Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company is working with Ray-ban to create new augmented reality glasses.
It’s coming sometime in the future, and it complements the existing collaboration Meta and Ray-ban have on Ray-ban Stories glasses. Zuckerberg said AR glasses will become more advanced over time. Rocco Basilico of Luxotica showed a demo of the new technology. And Ray-ban Stories is getting a Spotify update.
The announcement was part of the company’s Meta Connect event, where Zuckerberg talked about things to come in the future. And Meta is working on many things.
Meta also showed new technologies for people with accessibility issues. One showed a controller strapped to someone’s wrist that could control a game with minimal body movement.
It makes Project Aria research goggles to map out a public place so people who can’t see can get around better. There are research techniques to make virtual objects a part of your real world, said Mike Abrash, Meta’s chief scientist. He showed a demo of using virtual hands to interact with real clothes in another location. He wants to make you feel like you’re sharing a social space with other people at the gut level.
Meta is also working on updates to its Codec avatars, which create ultra-realistic 3D avatars by scanning people in a room full of sensors. Zuckerberg did a scan himself and it looks pretty real. And creepy of course.
“This is one of the most inspiring things we’re working on,” Zuckerberg said.
All this stuff is research, but it’s a glimpse of where technology is going, Abrash said. Zuckerberg said the company will put people at the center of everything it builds. He said the company’s role is to build the open ecosystem and make sure it wins over closed ecosystems in the future. (Ah, Apple).
“This is an exciting time to work on the metaverse,” Zuckerberg said. “We invest in this because we believe in the future.”
