In April, Valve revealed that it was Steam overhauled in a big way – not just a fresh coat of paint, but unifying the codebase between the Desktop, Big Picture Mode, and Steam Deck interfaces, adding new features such as a handy cloud notepad and pinnable panels in the in-game overlay, revamping the web browser, screenshot manager and notification tabs, and add hardware acceleration for Linux and Mac.
While much of that was available in beta, today is the day it goes wide of a full stable release. So if your Steam looks rather different, that’s why!
And reader, my gaming colleagues and I are in awe of how much we love that coat of paint. Despite older changes to the Store and Library tabs, Steam looked like an old application for a very long time, and now it’s… fun! “I finally like Steam,” confided my colleague Tom Warren.
Me, I’m still most excited about the cloud notepad, which I can confirm now works on Steam Deck too – although it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to use it as a translucent in-game overlay like you can on desktop can do. You can find it from within a game by pressing your Steam button and then scrolling down to Notes.
