A recent Gartner A survey of 304 infrastructure and operations (I&D) leaders and their teams found that 85% of I&D leaders who don’t currently have full automation expect to become more automated in the next two to three years.
Given the growing interest in I&D automation, Gartner predicts that by 2025, 70% of organizations will implement structured automation to deliver agility and efficiency. This is an increase from 20% of organizations that had implemented structured automation in 2021.
The research found that I&D makes the most use of automation within implementation domains, a natural focus of automation activities as organizations work to reduce friction found at the intersection of I&D and its technology-producing consumers. Most respondents say their efforts in automating application deployment, security compliance, and server deployment are impactful and valuable.
However, the rise of devops, Agile and site reliability engineering (SRE) has led to increased automation across operational domains such as monitoring and analysis and incident troubleshooting. The survey found that with only 43% of I&O teams currently automating monitoring and analytics, 83% find such automation efforts valuable. Similarly, only 36% of I&O teams automate incident and problem resolution, but more than three-quarters of those respondents consider it valuable.
