Bosch dishwashers add PowerControl to prevent poor loading of plates

The new thing is a PowerControl spray arm that can find the dirtiest dishes wherever you put them (as long as that spot is on the bottom rack):

The PowerControlâ„¢ spray arm provides a targeted intensive wash from anywhere in the lower rack – no matter where the dishes are placed.

Basically, you can target specific bottom rack quadrants for extra attention. According to the manually for one of the new dishwashers, it looks like you’ll need the Bosch Home Connect app to actually set up those quadrants; otherwise your options are to split more intensive cleaning between the front and back halves. That’s all well and good, but what about if you left your phone in another room or the WiFi goes down?

In case you needed stats to understand how intense the dish charging discussion is, Bosch provided some on behalf of Bosch from a SWNS survey of 2,000 people. It says that 54 percent of Americans argue about how to load a dishwasher, 87 percent rearrange them after someone else has already loaded the dishwasher, and finally, 35 percent have “considered” giving someone they live the silent treatment after a fight.

The new spray arm’s pitch for “helping” is that it can get anything clean no matter where it’s loaded (again, on the bottom rack). That’s quite a claim, and to that I say good luck, you crazy fools.

Because I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Encrusted food-laden cast iron on the top rack. I watched as metal straws were placed sideways in the rack, never touched by the rays of the dishwasher. All those dishes get washed again, wasting water until it’s time to dry.

Many years ago, my partner and I settled our dishwashing debate without buying a new app-controlled dishwasher. Having worked in several commercial kitchens and bars where I had to optimize all the space on the drying rack, I have strong feelings about where things are going, and when we finally got a dishwasher a few years ago, that extended to placement of the rack in the infernal machine.

Likewise, she believes clothes shouldn’t be washed and dried all together, forever using the same settings for each load. We valued her feelings on the matter and she appreciated mine, and we agreed that a fair division is a total division of those duties. Of course, if you want to tackle things without messy solutions like “have a conversation,” have you heard of these new dishwashers?

The new dishwashers will be available this month and will cost up to $1,799. The cheapest model on the Bosch website with the new PowerControl arm is $1,299 800 series.
