BeReal releases another feature that seems to go against the purpose of the app: a feed dedicated to famous people. Instead of exchanging pictures with your friends every day, you now get to see what the world’s top athletes, artists and activists are up to.
BeReal, the app that markets itself as “Your Real Friends,” gives you different time periods each day to take a selfie and a head-on photo to share with friends. The whole point of the app is to randomly share what you’re up to with friends, whether you’re doing something as boring as laying in bed or sitting at your computer at work.
But now BeReal is throwing strangers into the mix. The new feed, called RealPeople, is a “curated timeline of the world’s most interesting people” featuring “an ever-changing collection” of high-profile people from around the world. The whole point of the feature is to show that celebrities are regular people just like us (yes, Real).
“RealPeople is not about influencing, collecting likes or comments, or promoting brands,” writes BeReal. “You don’t see photoshopped photos, product recommendations, or ads disguised as posts. It tries to show that we are all more alike than we think.”
The app is only testing the feature in the UK for now, which you can access by clicking the Discovery tab and then hit Real people. From here you can reply to posts with a RealMoji while scrolling through the timeline, hide and report posts. BeReal also notes that you can introduce someone (or yourself) to its RealPeople timeline through this formthough it’s unclear if BeReal already has users lining up for its feed.
