A new batch of leaked renders is said to show an upcoming Samsung device in a range of flashy colors. The leak is Thanks to The technical outlook (spotted by XDA Developers) and features the Galaxy A34 with some healthy midrange specs: a 6.5-inch 1080p OLED, 48-megapixel main camera and an Exynos chipset. But what is real exciting are the color options: Lime! Violet! Pearl! If these renderings are accurate, we could see a more colorful outlook for budget phones in 2023, and it’s about damn time.
Somewhere in recent history, phone makers decided that people in the US – especially those on a budget – only wanted black phones. Quickly on Samsung’s current A-series options shows most models in exactly one color choice: black. Or awesome black, which just seems to be black with a stupid name. If you move up to the S22 series or a Z Flip 4, you get a lot more color choices, such as burgundy, purple and whatever combination you can make for the foldable.
Apple and Google are doing a little better, but not by much. The 2022 iPhone SE will be available in black, white and red, while the Pixel 6A will be offered in black, white and sage. Not exactly the excitement of lime. Other OEMs like Motorola and OnePlus stick to a black-phone-plus-something-else formula for flagships, but the further you get into the budget range, the less colorful it gets.
It doesn’t take the moon to get just a nice color next to black right?
Why? Is it a cost-cutting measure to keep the prices of cheap phones down? Is it because US carriers somehow bully manufacturers into only offering their dullest models here because carriers dictate everything about the US phone market? Are we content to buy a black phone, put a case on it and then call it quits? I suspect there is a little bit of truth to all of the above.
Sadly, even if they’re the real deal, these colorful Samsung A34 options are unlikely to reach our shores at all. They will be sold in other markets where fun phone colors are appreciated. I don’t think it has to be – it doesn’t ask for the moon to become just a nice color next to black right? At least I’m hoping for more colorful phones at any price point in 2023, even if I’m more likely to get a new one great black phone on my desk sometime in the near future.
