The Mummy movie franchise is attractive because it is not as straightforward as other franchises created in the past. Not only are there several prominent movies, but there is also a prequel and there has been a reboot as well. There seems to be a desire for another movie for most of the franchise, but how much chance is this?
There may be other movie franchises that are making headlines and being held in higher esteem, but The Mummy is undoubtedly one of the best we’ve seen, and its influence outside of the movie world should be noted as well. So not only have there been movies, but there have been several video games and even a gambling game Legacy of the dead that are inspired by the movie. There have also been TV shows and even an amusement park ride. Not many movie franchises have achieved this level of expansion.
But it’s movies that take center stage, and again, what’s interesting is that there’s been a string of The Mummy movies before, and in modern times another trio of movies, including The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Mummy: Tomb or the Dragon Emperor, and it’s this set that’s seen as the holy grail, with the 2017 reboot playing Tom Cruise going down like a lead balloon. And if it were possible to build on what came before, fans of the franchise would be incredibly happy.
A lot of talk about a possible sequel is based on comments made by Brendan Fraser, who played Rick O’Connell, the adventurer in The Mummy franchise. Fraser recently returned to Hollywood and has been told he may reprise his role in another episode of The Mummy. Fraser suggested that he “isn’t against it” as it would reprise his role, but so far there’s been no talk of anything happening. However, that may all change in the future.
Fraser stepped away from Hollywood, but he’s now back with a bang, starring in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. And this could be the crucial step, as Fraser will probably be an essential part of every new installment in the franchise. Fraser also knows the potential for The Mummy to make a comeback after trying to do this himself in the past, and he suggested in 2019 that if it did happen, the only way to do it is to make the process fun to make.
So while there’s nothing in the pipeline right now, Fraser’s return to Hollywood and how much fans have previously invested in The Mummy certainly means that bringing the franchise back to life should be considered at some point. And as it’s been almost fifteen years since The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was released, it opens the door for a fresh approach and to see how the story can be plotted because so much time has passed.
