Brian Elwin Haner Sr. is an American musician and novelist, better known by his stage name Guitar Guy or Papa Gates. He was born on April 7, 1958 and his talents as a guitarist and comedian are both well developed. He is now recognized as a top comedian for his stage acting ability and his talent for making people laugh.
During his time on the road with Jeff Dunham, Brian Haner was seen by more than two million people, making it the largest comedy tour in history. In addition, he appeared on the Jeff Dunham holiday show with 20 million viewers.
Guitar Guy’s Career
High school senior Brian Haner was already well on his way to a successful profession and a life of musical activity. After graduating from high school, he worked various jobs and performed in Los Angeles nightclubs. He attended the Dick Grove School of Music to study composition, film scoring, and advanced music theory.
After receiving formal music training, he joined Motown superstar Norman Whitefield as a session guitarist and also played with Undisputed Truth, Rose Royce and Jr. Walker. After a year, he signed with Polydor Records under the alias Brian West and started his mainstream career.

Before anything, Brian Haner released his first self-produced album, Don’t Stop Now, which featured a Tower of Horns song.. The record was a resounding success and went gold in several places, including Europe. After the success of his first album, he recorded more music and toured Europe in the 1980s. In addition, he was presented with various opportunities in the 1990s. He expanded his work with dozens of videos and TV broadcasts. From 1998 to 2003, he served as executive producer of his wife’s television program on hypnotherapy.
In 2003, when his previous recording contract with a Nashville song publisher had expired, Brian Haner signed a new one. There he released two albums, including My Old Guitar. His debut book, Carney Man, was released in 2005 and was an instant hit, prompting him to try his hand at stand-up comedy.
He started in comedy by performing in bars and eventually opened for Bobby Slayton in Las Vegas in 2006. During his tour the same year, he joined Jeff Dunham for a series of specials on Comedy Central under the name Guitar Guy starring Jeff Dunham.

Three Brian Haner CDs were published during the tour: Cougar Bait, Fistfight at the Wafflehouse, and Jeff Dunham’s Very Special Christmas, featuring puppets created by Dunham to perform Haner’s original music. In 2011 three albums of his were released: The Artist Formerly Known As Guitar Guy, Alone and ‘Perfect World’.
Brian Haner, a comedian who has appeared on Red Light Comedy Special, was the star attraction of the South Africa Comedy Festival in 2012. With his second novel, Ginny Reb, about a young man’s experience in the Confederate army, he once again proved himself more be a multi-talented man who never fails to boost his audience’s good releases.
Later in 2014, he put his stand-up career on hold to lead the Commercial Music Program at California’s Orange County School of the Arts. Nevertheless, he kept up with the session work and composed the score for the Syfy channel drama Z nation.
Revenged sevenfold
While making their third studio album, City of Evil, Brian Haner joined Avenged Sevenfold. During the session he could be heard on acoustic and electric guitar. Together with his child he had a guitar solo battle on the sidewinder. He also arranged strings for the band’s self-titled album and orchestrated a version of Diamonds in the Rough’s “Till the end.”
The guitar work continues “So far away” and “Tonight the world dies”, a guitar solo “Nightmare,” are both his. The guitarist also collaborated with Avenged Sevenfold on the album Angels on the Stage, playing the outro guitar for the song “Coming home,” which appeared on the album Hail to the King.
