When does Doctor Who season 14 air?
The BBC has pinpointed exactly when to expect new episodes, with our very first glimpse of Ncuti Gatwa in action as the future Doctor, after Jodie Whittaker‘s farewell appearance as the Thirteenth Doctor and that long overdue and incredibly surprising regeneration.
Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a very long time. Mark November 2023 in your calendars for the release of the 60th anniversary specials, which will star David Tenant and Catherine Tate, two celebrities loved by viewers.
Following this is Gatwa’s first full episode as the Doctor in 2023, during the holiday season.

Who’s in the upcoming Doctor Who season 14 cast?
As usual with a transfer, the return of Russell T Davies as showrunner heralds the appearance of a new Doctor. Fans were surprised to find out on May 8, 2022 that S*x Education actor Ncuti Gatwa had already been announced as our new Doctor. They expected the announcement to come in Jodie Whittaker’s latest adventure.
“There aren’t really words to describe how I feel,” Gatwa said of this historic moment. “A mix of very honored, over excited and of course a little scared.”
“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and all of my incredibly talented predecessors have handled that individual responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will do my very best to do the same.”
“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, brilliant and brimming with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground.”
“The whole team was so welcoming and really gave their hearts to the show. And so, as daunting as it is, I am aware that I am joining a supportive family. Unlike the doctor, I may only have one heart, but I give my all to this show.
The rest of Season 14’s new cast hasn’t been formally revealed yet, though some of the popular favorites for the Doctor himself may appear in a different role. So is Jo Martin, a character we’ve already seen who could easily play the role of the Fugitive Doctor.
Olly Alexander is a name that keeps coming up. Olly was not only closely associated with Davies as a result of It’s a Sin, but also had a role in a Doctor Who spin-off during his time on that programme. Getting him a new companion or maybe giving him a snarky guest star wouldn’t be too hard.
Mandip Gill suggested that Yaz return to the show one day just before Ncuti declared. When asked on BBC’s The One Show if the centenary special would be Yaz’s final appearance, the actress replied:
“It’ll be mine. Well, not forever, because who knows in Doctor Who? But [Yaz’s story] ends in that episode, but not forever, because who knows? See what I did there?” noted the actress.
Doctor, Who season 14 plot: what will happen?
Even before announcing Russell’s return, the BBC’s Director of Drama said, said Piers Wenger“As with any doctor and showrunner change, we will be radical […] Change is imminent.”
Few could have imagined that this move would mean the most beloved Doctor Who showrunner returned to the program years after he initially left. Russell commented on this saying:
“I am beyond excited to be back on my favorite show. But we travel too fast through time. There’s a really brilliant series of Doctors by Jodie Whittaker for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm. For now, I am still a viewer.”

Discussing his replacement, Chibnall said: “It is hugely exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriter diamonds return home. Russell builds the baton to return it.
“Doctor Who, the BBC, the film industry in Wales, and let’s face it, everyone in the world has so many reasons to be very excited about what lies ahead.”
However, fans became concerned when it was revealed that Bad Wolf would replace BBC Studios as the producer of Doctor Who, potentially costing the BBC £40 million for every ten episodes produced. The BBC recently challenged this and clarified that they would retain commercial oversight. It is important to note that The Times report stated that Bad Wolf would also take charge of the ‘artistic direction’.
“We are incredibly excited about the future of Doctor Who. BBC Studios is ultimately responsible for delivering the show and this production partnership is about the long-term investment that will radically build on the already huge success of the show and franchise worldwide. said a BBC representative.
We just hope that Russell can still bring his style to the program and possibly bring us even more uplifting LGBTQ+ content than Doctor Who has ever included. Yaz and the Doctor may have had a strange romance in the Flux finale, but hints aren’t enough. Plus, Jodie Whittaker’s latest episode didn’t add much to this.
It’s time for Doctor Who to embrace the present by including a gay Doctor. And in light of that, we wouldn’t be shocked if Russell used this opportunity to turn Ncuti’s Doctor into a lesbian.
Doctor Who season 14 trailer: when can we see it?
Fans have now gotten a taste of what’s to come next year, thanks to an exciting trailer.
It, of course, offered a first look at Ncuti Gatwa in action, with a brief clip of the new Doctor passionately exclaiming, “Can someone tell me what the hell is going on here?”
It has also been confirmed by Russell T Davies that Ncuti will be the fifteenth Doctor, following the regeneration that brought David Tennant back to the role.
“If you thought David Tennant’s appearance was a shock, we have many more surprises to come!” he said. “The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is fraught with mystery, horror, robots, dolls, danger and fun!”
