John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas. He was one of seven children born to Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd, the middle child. Mathis was born in Texas, but his family moved to San Francisco when he was little, and he grew up there.

Mathis said:he was quite confident because he knew he could sing and knew there were many other people in the same situation. He also said, when asked about the state of accepting people as they are – unlike in 1982 – that things are much better now, thanks to young people embracing new things.”
