Unbroken Season 1: The Coen brothers, Richard LaGravenese and William Nicholson wrote the 2014 American biographical war drama film Unbroken which produced, directed and starred Angelina Jolie. It is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s non-fiction book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, published in 2010. The film stars Jack O’Connell as Louis “Louie” Zamperini, a US Olympian and Army officer, and plays Miyavi Mutsuhiro Watanabe, a corporal in the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA).
During World War II, Zamperini managed to survive on a raft for 47 days before the Japanese seized him and sent him to various POW camps. From October 2013 to February 2014, Australia served as a filming location. The film Unbroken had its world premiere in Sydney on November 17, 2014.
It premiered in London on November 26, 2014 at the Odeon Leicester Square. On December 25, 2014, the film was released in the US. Critics had a mixed reaction, but praised O’Connell’s performance, Deakins’ cinematography and sound design, and Jolie’s direction. With a worldwide gross of $163 million, it was profitable. In 2018, the sequel, Unbroken: Path to Redemption, was released.
