On Thursday, the surviving partner of a Capitol police officer killed in the Jan. 6 attack filed a lawsuit against former President Donald J. Trump and two Capitol rioters, alleging that the officer’s death was a “immediate and foreseeable consequenceof the actions of Trump and the rioters.
Nearly two years after Officer Brian D. Sicknick was attacked with chemical spray on Jan. 6, a lawsuit was filed in the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia seeking at least $10 million in damages from Mr. Trump and two men, George Tanios and Julian Elie Khater. Mr. Tanios pleaded guilty to minor counts, while Mr. Khater pleaded guilty to assault.
“The horrific events of January 6, 2021, including the tragic wrongful death of Officer Sicknick, were a direct and foreseeable consequence of the defendant’s unlawful actions,” said the suit and added that “The defendants are responsible for the injury and destruction that followed.”
Although Officer Sicknick died the day after the mob confrontation, prosecutors did not press charges because the Washington medical examiner found his death to be from natural causes (several strokes that occurred hours after the mob confrontation). But “everything that happened played a role in his condition,” the coroner said Capitol Police call his death a ‘line of duty’ tragedy.
Sandra Garza, Agent Sicknick’s lifelong companion, and the estate’s broker have filed a lawsuit against the president, claiming that he was responsible for the January 6 violence and especially Sicknick’s murder. According to the indictment, the parliamentary committee that examined the attack on January 6 “made a number of criminal referrals” to Mr. Trump “on the basis of finding sufficient evidence of one or more possible violations,'” said the complaint, adding that this “including inciting an insurrection.”
A representative for Mr Trump said in an early statement Friday that the complaint is baseless. Several lawsuits have been filed against the ex-president alleging financial responsibility for the aftermath of the January 6 attack. In February, a federal court ruled to allow three legal complaints against Mr. Trump. A legal challenge to the ruling is being prepared.
