It’s been 20 years since viewers first visited Clone High, an adult animated series on MTV. Despite being canceled prematurely after just one season, the show developed a cult fan base that vocally demanded a reboot by making loud demands on social media.
We’ve come a long way since the news that HBO Max had bought two seasons of the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s production broke, and thanks to Miller, a release date is now nearly two years away.
Miller tweeted a GIF of JFK’s clone coming off the ice with a hair dryer on Twitter to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the show’s first appearance. Miller said, “It seems time to unfreeze the clones,” in the caption before stating that viewers may expect the series to air sometime in 2023.
We’ll take it, even if that’s a somewhat wide release window! It’s encouraging to know that new series episodes are still being defrosted and not put back in the freezer after not much news has been heard in recent years.
During a January interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraubthe creative duo dropped the update “some episodes are now in animation” but they weren’t sure “when it hits the airwaves.”
Lord went on to reveal that they were at the time “record voices” and that because it was picked up for two seasons, the cast and crew were hard at work putting each of those episodes together.
A one-season phenomenon, the animated Clone High follows a group of teenage clones of famous historical people as they make their way through high school. There was JFK (Christa Miller), Gandhi (Michael McDonald), Gandhi (Will Fote), Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan), and Cleopatra (Christa Miller) (Miller).
The most important and mad scientist Dr. Cinnamon J. Scudworth (Lord) and his second-in-command, Mr. Butlertron, held the highest position in the administrative structure (Miller).
For Lord and Miller, the series would be a major career highlight. Since then, they have worked on several notable projects such as The Lego Movie, the 21 Jump Street film series, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verseand last year’s Apple TV+ comedy, The Afterparty.
