Police shot and killed a recording engineer who had won a Grammy. They investigated claims that he had taken his wife and stepdaughter and held them at gunpoint.
Metropolitan Nashville Police Department public affairs director Don Aaron said in a “critical incident briefing” that Mark J. Capps, who is 54 years old, allegedly pointed a gun at the police who came to assist in the kidnapping.
Aaron said SWAT agents went to the house on Summit Run Pl. to execute a warrant against Capps for two counts of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault “Because he kept his 60-year-old wife and his 23-year-old stepdaughter at gunpoint in the house at night.”
Aaron said Capps woke up the mother and daughter at 3 a.m. and pointed a gun at them. They said he forced them into the living room with a gun and wouldn’t let them leave.

They said Capps kept pointing the gun at them and started saying if they tried to call anyone he would kill them and “any police who showed up at the house,” said Aaron.
The two victims told the director of public affairs that they were able to escape when Capps fell asleep. They left the house and drove to the police station in Hermitage. Later, just before 2pm, police issued an arrest warrant and told SWAT about the situation. Aaron said this was because Capps had access to guns and had been violent the night before.
When SWAT arrived on the scene, they were able to get close to the house without Capps knowing. He then “opened the front door” while holding a gun.
Have a look at:
Kendall Coon, a SWAT officer with 14 years of experience, told Capps to put his hands up. “Agent Coon believed Capps’ movements posed an imminent menacing threat and fired,” Aaron continued.
Officers can be heard yelling at Capps from the door, “Show me your hands!” The officers then enter the house after firing at the glass door. Aaron said Capps had died a short time later, before showing a photo of the gun Capps was holding.
Aaron said the case is being investigated by both the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the MNPD. He said the investigation has just begun and it is “will take time to complete.” The TBI and the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office are also investigating, and the MNPD investigates the actions of the officers to make sure they “meet the high standards expected of our officers.”
I’m really out of words, Mark Capps helped on my album. Mental health is so important. Please pray for the entire country music and gospel music industry as it has lost one of the most talented producers to ever work in a studio. If you need to reach someone, DO IT. pic.twitter.com/JFfxX7rIxL

Billboard says that over the course of his career, Capps has collaborated with Olivia Newton-John, The Chicks, Big & Rich and Barry Manilow. Jimmy Capps, who died, played lead guitar for the Grand Ole Opry house band. Capps shared four Grammy Awards from 2006 to 2009 for Best Polka Album with Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra.
Variety said that two days before he died, Capps said on social media that his brother had passed away… Just follow us on Lee Daily for more news like this.
