Jo Soaresa well-known comedian and singer died on August 5 at the age of 84. Flavia Pedra, his ex-wife, broke the news on social media, writing:
“You are proud of everyone who has shared your life in one way or another.” I thank the Lords of Time and Space for letting our paths cross. Thanks for the asthmatic laughter, our homes my way, the visits to the fanciest and corniest locations, the number of movies you thought were lucky I didn’t remember seeing them again, and the obscene amount of ice we had seen.”
The details of Jô’s funeral have yet to be published. Jô Soares has pneumonia and has been treated at Sirio Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo since July 28, 2022. However, the exact cause of death has not been disclosed. Relatives have not revealed how long Soares had the condition or if he had any other health problems in the past.
The life and career of Jô Soares in brief
Born on January 16, 1938, Soares was a well-known comedian, talk show host, author and musician. He spoke five languages fluently: Portuguese, English, French, Italian and Spanish. Jô originally intended to become a diplomat, following in his great-grandfather’s footsteps, but instead returned to Brazil to study acting. He completed his education in a Swiss boarding school in the 1950s. Soares first appeared in music films in 1954 and his television career began in 1958. He worked on such films as O Homem do Sputnik and Vai Que e Mole. In 1967, he was cast in the hit television series A Familia Trapo, followed by three more comedy programs – Face Humor, Nao Faca Guerra, Satiricom and Planeta dos Homens.
Jô produced, directed and starred in the 1976 film O Pai do Povo. In 1970, he joined Globo TV and played numerous roles in Viva o Gordo. He then joined SBT where, in addition to anchoring the conversation show Jo Onze e Meia, he produced another program, Veja o Gordo. Soares returned to Globo TV to develop Programa do Jo. He also wrote a number of novels, including O Xango de Baker Street, O Homem Que Matou Getulio Vargas, and Assassinato na Academia Brasileira de Letras.
