Early years and education
Jerry Lee Rice was born in Starkville, Mississippi, on October 13, 1962. He was the sixth of eight children and grew up in the neighborhood of Crawford, Mississippi. Only 600 people lived in Crawford, so it was a small town. Joe, Rice’s father, was a bricklayer who built houses by hand and also worked other jobs to support his family.
Rice attended high school in Oktoc, Mississippi, at BL Moor High School. Rice initially did not play sports in high school, even though he played mock basketball and football. He loved playing football in the sand and watching football on TV.
Rice’s mother did not allow him to join the school’s football team during his freshman year, believing the sport was “too brutal.”

In Rice’s senior year, he was named wide receiver to the Mississippi All-State team. Because Moor was so small, not many of his statistics were kept officially. Glen Dickeya sportswriter, says Rice caught 50 passes and scored 30 touchdowns as a senior, leading the team 17–2 in his last two seasons.
Willie Gillespie, Moor’s starting quarterback, and he were both very reliable, so much so that people called them “Johnny Unitas” and “Raymond Berry.” Rice first wanted to go to Mississippi State University, but they didn’t want him. More than 40 NCAA Division IA schools contacted him, but none of them gave him a scholarship.
He chose Mississippi Valley State in part because the school’s coach, Archie Cooley, had a pass foul. Cooley was known as “The Gunslinger” because of how much he passed the ball. Rice decided to play for Mississippi Valley State after Cooley saw him perform in person and after he visited the school’s campus.
