Early life, parents and education
Fredricka was raised in Honolulu as an only child by her father Mal Whitfield, an American athlete, pilot and ambassador of goodwill, and who is perhaps best known as the Olympic champion in the 800 meter race in both 1948 and 1952 – Fredricka’s mother was a housewife who preferred not to be in the media.

She eventually found work in New Haven, Connecticutand started working at WTNH as their news anchor, staying there for a year before moving to Charleston, South Carolina to join WCIV virtual channel 36. She gained some popularity in the US in 1995, when she became a correspondent for “NBC Nightly News,” and she kept the job for the next six years, while also contributing occasionally to several other NBC programs, including the News and the morning talk show “Today.”
In 2002, Fredricka joined CNN (Cable News Network), one of the most popular networks in the US, launched in 1980 by Ted Turner, a media owner and philanthropist, and Reese Schonfeld, a journalist and TV executive.
It was the first 24/7 news channel and is now headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
