‘Midnight Mass’ ending explained: what happened, who made it out alive and what it all means
Mike Flanagan is no stranger to tales of trauma, faith and all kinds of terrifying creatures, but with his latest Netflix series, Midnight Mass – his third, his self-proclaimed most personal and the first unmodified all original of the couple – filmmaker Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor have taken things in an unexpected direction.
Trauma, faith and scary things are still prominent, but this time he dumped the ghosts in favor of a seven-episode creature feature that mixes vampire tropes with biblical lyrics.
Flanagan explained during a round table discussion with Collider’s Christina Radish and reporters from various other media outlets: “When I was a kid studying the Bible, it was impossible to ignore the horror elements contained within.
We had no connection at all horror and religion. That already existed… You have demons. You have talking snakes. People are mauled and tortured. It’s all there. The Bible is a blood-soaked text.”

Midnight Mass, set in the remote community of Crockett Island, begins when a “new” priest arrives in town, with miracles and monstrosities. The community meets Father Paul Hill in place of the elderly Monsignor John Michael Pruitt, the island’s old local minister, who is expected to return (Hamish Linklater). The inhabitants of the island undergo inexplicable transformations within seconds.
Mildred (Alex Essoe), an elderly woman, is aging and recovering quickly from dementia. Leeza (Annarah Cymone), a paralyzed teenage girl, regains her ability to walk. Erin (Kate Siegel), a pregnant woman, not only miscarries her baby, but tests reveal she was never pregnant in the first place. Monsters… and miracles.
It’s a dense, heavily textual series that leaves a lot of questions unanswered, but if you’ve just finished your binge, we’ve got you covered with a deep dive into what the heck is happening and what it all means – with insight from Flanagan himself.

Flanagan has stated that this is his most personal project to date, something he’s spent his entire career working on, and it shows – he’s poured his heart and soul into this thing, which is both a blessing and a hindrance.

When you watch ‘Midnight Mass’ you get the sense that Flanagan has a lot to say, and he puts all those words into the mouths of his characters, many of whom indulge in extremely lengthy existential monologues. The monologue can become tiresome and distracting – no one talks like that.
