Danny Care Biography
Danny Care was born in the English city of Leeds, West Yorkshire. Although his initial interest was football, he started playing rugby union at the age of six with his hometown club in Leeds, West Park Bramhope RUFC (now West Park Leeds RUFC). He was asked to join the Academy at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club at the age of 11, which meant he had to give up rugby union, but was allowed to continue playing at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley.
He assisted Prince Henry’s win the Under-13 Yorkshire Cup in 2000, but he practically missed the entire following season due to a broken leg sustained in a school game. He was forced to choose between football and rugby the following season, and he requested that Sheffield Wednesday release him from his Academy contract so he could concentrate on rugby union; at the end of the season he was named to Yorkshire Schools’ Under-15s. This was his first foray into representative rugby and he was named man-of-the-match in the Roses’ encounter against Lancashire at Pontefract. In May 2002, he was a member of the West Yorkshire squad that won the first under-15 national 10-a-side festival held at the Commonwealth Games stadium in Manchester.
