Claudia Celeste, the first transgender actress to star in Brazilian telenovelas without hiding her identity, was recently recognized and honored in a Google Doodle. On Monday, August 22, 2022, the doodle was all about the life of this actress, singer, director, producer and author. Claudia debuted as an openly trans woman in the opening episode of Ohlo Por Ohlo on August 22, 1988. Despite her performance, she was fired from the cast when management discovered her real identity.

Claudia was born in Brazil in 1952 and entered the military as a teenager. She did obtain a beauty certificate at the age of 20. In Rio de Janeiro she started her profession as a hairdresser. This was the moment in her life when she decided to change something.

Claudia’s first name was Carlos Imperial, but she was given the stage name Cláudia Celeste when she entered the theater. She then worked as a dancer in many nightclubs. After the government got permission to exhibit O Mundo é das Bonecas, a theater saw Claudia’s work and asked her, along with other transgender actresses, to play. Celeste began to be recognized for her abilities after the success of her theatrical presentations.

She was crowned Miss Brazil Pop in 1976. A year later, she made her soap opera debut with a production called Magic Mirror. At the time, few people knew that Claudia was transgender, but the news quickly spread. Although the program was cancelled, she continued her profession.

Her big break came from the soap drama Ohlo Por Ohlo. Claudia was able to stay true to herself and appear on film as a trans woman. Although she was discriminated against by management as soon as they discovered she was transsexual, the opportunity presented her with new opportunities. She died on May 13, 2018 in Brazil from pneumonia, after a prolific career.
