The finale starts on a sweet note. Jess and Melody bond in one parking in a new video. “When I’m older,” Jess says. “I want to be a bird that can fly away and see everything from the sky.” But Melody doesn’t know what she wants from the future, which subtly determines their fates by the end of the episode.
The scene then shifts to Melody’s incarceration in a psychiatric ward. Dan’s father, Steven, says he has Melody there for her own protection, promising to get her out of town in a few hours. Considering the cult of Samuel is still around, desperate to use Melody in demonic rituals, some protection would be nice, but this isn’t ideal.
At least Melody is reunited with her best friend. Annabel is also locked up in this hospital, making drawings of Iris Vos, the debutante Kaelego tried to evoke in the 1920s. “She’s not dead,” Annabel says. ‘She’s in. An other world. She calls me.

‘The ferryman had arrived. I can’t see him anymore, but he’s still up there. The door is opened by the comet. The ritual will be performed tonight to open the door.
The episode summary
What a delightfully twisted End Twilight Zone! There’s a lot to unpack here, and it’s left to interpretation where Dan will end up. My guess is he’s still in the Otherworld, having been tricked into believing he was in a coma the entire time to feed the demon and keep Dan unconcerned about his reality.
Utilities, Julia warned Dan that he would be tempted, and if this is true, it is certainly true.
Despite Archive 81’s strengths, the show was a bit messy at times, especially with this ending. It’s not alone the conclusion rushes (which is unusual given the slow pace of the show), but it also doesn’t fully explain everything.
Iris is still a source of contention, as is how Baldungs are chosen, or how Melody was able to communicate with Dan and see him when Iris couldn’t. The show has been a bit sloppy and a little light on horror. When it comes to mystery and drama, this film has plenty of them, but does the end justify the means? I’m not convinced.

This may seem strange (especially given how positively I found the episodes), but Archive 81 feels like a patchwork of different horror concepts merged into a story that’s more investigative drama horror (a la The Ring) than a truly multi-dimensional creepy thriller.
Archive 81 could have used a little more editing to make it a bit more palatable, but the ending definitely leaves room for one possible sequel. Will Netflix renew it though? We’ll have to wait.
