Dayton is a city in the US state of Ohio and the county seat of Montgomery County. A small portion of the city extends into Greene County. The Dayton metropolitan area is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in Ohio and the 61st-largest in the United States. With a 2019 population of 841,502, it is the fifth largest in Ohio. Dayton is located in Ohio’s Miami Valley region, just north of Greater Cincinnati. The town was founded on April 1, 1796 by 12 settlers known as the Dayton Company. They bought the land from the Miami tribe. The city was incorporated in 1805 and named after Dayton, New Jersey, where many of the settlers came from. The Wright brothers invented and built the world’s first airplane in Dayton in 1903, and the city was home to Orville Wright and many other important figures in early aviation. The National Aviation Hall of Fame is located in Dayton. The city has been hit by several tornadoes, most notably the 1967 Xenia tornado, the worst in Ohio history. More recently, the 2013 Memorial Day tornadoes caused extensive damage in Dayton’s western and northern suburbs. Dayton is a friendly city for everyone, including the LGBTQ community. A conservative-minded group comprises about half of the class, while an even liberal-minded group comprises the other half. As I listened to students’ opinions, I was reminded of the impact the most influential teachers have on our lives. They make us think critically and challenge our assumptions, like Joe did, and they make us question our assumptions. Joe is a great teacher because he is dedicated to learning and teaching. He is more than just a mentor to his students; he is also a friend. The students have benefited from his presence and he will have a great impact on everyone’s lives Purdue students.
