Mark Farner, full name Mark Fredrick Farner, was born on September 29, 1948 in Flint, Michigan, United States. Delton Farner and Betty Farner were his parents. During the Second World War, his father was a tank driver in the Seventh Armored Division. He showed an interest in music from an early age and took guitar lessons during his school years.

Mark Farner began his career in Terry Knight and The Pack between 1965 and 1966, The Bossmen in 1966 and The Pack (aka The Fabulous Pack) between 1967 and 1968. In 1968, he formed the American hard rock band Grand Funk Railroad with Don Brewer on drums and Mel Schacher on bass guitar. Craig Frost, who played keyboards, joined the band in 1973.
Mark was the lead guitarist and vocalist for the band, as well as the songwriter for most of the songs. “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”, one of the band’s most famous songs, was released in 1970 and was a huge success. He also wrote the 1975 song “Bad Time,” the last of the band’s four singles to reach the Billboard Hot 100 Top 5. However, the group broke up in 1976.
In 1977 he released his first self-titled album as a solo artist. “No Frills” (1978) and “Just Another Injustice” (1979) were his other albums (1988). He is the lead singer of the popular song “Isn’t it Amazing”, which earned him a Dove Award nomination and ranked number two on the contemporary Christian charts. He and Steve Lisk founded Lismark Communications. He also has his own record label, LisMark Records.
