Spotify is testing a new feature that could make it easier to keep listening when you don’t have an internet connection. Called “Your Offline Mix,” the playlist would automatically “save a mix of your recently played songs for when the mood is high but your connection is low,” according to one screenshot shared by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek that shows a playlist of about three and a half hours. Ek hasn’t shared a timeline for when the feature might see a wider rollout, but since he’s publicly tweeting about the test, hopefully it’s not too far off.
The audio streaming app already allows users to download playlists or albums for offline listening; a handy feature for saving data when you are not using WiFi, or when you have no internet connection at all while doing anything from traveling on a plane or on the subway. But choosing which music to download can be an irritating manual process, especially if you’re someone who likes to jump between a lot of different music.
Your offline mix looks like it could be a nice feature when it rolls out. In the meantime, if you’re having a hard time choosing which playlists to download for offline listening, I recommend downloading the “Your Top Songs” playlist Spotify made for you last year. It might miss your more recent listening obsessions, but at least you’ll have a decent starting point to fall back on if your internet lets you down.
