Macy Gray was born in Canton, Ohio, on September 6, 1967. When she was a baby, her father left the family. Her stepfather, a steel worker, and her mother, a math teacher, raised her.

She started studying piano when she was seven years old. She attended a number of institutions, including Canton South High School, where she graduated in 1985. She was temporarily expelled from a boarding school because of her actions. She then went on to study screenwriting at the University of Southern California.
