How did Mamamoo come about?
A popular South Korean entertainment company RBW (Rainbow Bridge World), founded by Kim Do-hoon and Kim Jin-woo in 2010, founded the girl group, which debuted in February 2014 with their single “Don’t Be Happy”, a collaboration with Bumkey, a well-known South Korean rapper and R&B singer.
Although the K-pop music industry’s market is highly competitive, Billboard magazine ranked Mamamoo in its top 5 of new Korean bands worthy of attention: “With a retro-based sound that highlights their excellent singing and rapping skills, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before the cool quartet has a signature song that makes them the best girl groups,” the source touted their singles “Piano Man”, “Baton Touch” and “Peppermint Chocolate”.
Then their single “Mr. Ambiguous”, released in June 2014, made them shine, supported by South Korean pop stars like Baek Ji-young, K.Will, Jung Joon-young and many others, who appeared in their music video for that single .
further success
In the same year of 2014, Mamamoo recorded the soundtrack for the drama titled “Marriage, Not Dating”. Their single “Love Lane” hit the local charts and reached the first lines. In 2015, the band released another EP titled “Pink Funky”, their third EP after the successful “Hello” and “Piano Man”. From January 2015, Mamamoo became a regular participant of the popular music program “Immortal Songs 2”; on the show, they played old hits like “Wait a Minute,” originally performed by Joo Hyun-mi, “Delilah,” previously sung by Jo Young-nam, and “Backwood’s Mountain,” previously performed by Bae Ho.
From 2016 to 2017, Mamamoo released two more EPs: “Memory” and “Purple”.
Controversy over Mamamoo’s appearances in Seoul and Busan. Did they perform in blackface?
In late 2017, Mamamoo announced their upcoming concerts in Seoul and Busan, but their show titled “Mamamoo Concert Moosical: Curtain Call” was heavily criticized for playing in blackface. The controversy arose after the members of Mamamoo wore a dark shade of foundation while covering Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” in an attempt to look more like the original artist. However, their actions were received negatively and the producers had to cut that part of the show from their further performances. The singers apologized to their audience: “We were extremely ignorant of blackface and did not understand the implications of our actions.
We will take the time to learn more about our international fans to make sure this never happens again,” she said stated: in their official message to their fans.
“Four Seasons” project and other recent activities
In January 2018, Mamamoo announced their upcoming project: the “Four Seasons” music album series, which was created to discover the hidden potential of each member of the band. In March 2018, the project’s first EP titled “Yellow Flower” was released, and the lead single, “Starry Night”, charted the Top 10 Mid-Year Gaon Digital Chart, with the sixth line. The band supported their album with a live show at the SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium in Seoul; it’s worth noting that tickets to the show reportedly sold out within two minutes of the sale starting.

In July 2018, another EP from the “Four Seasons” project, “Red Moon” was released; the main single was titled “Egotistic”. Since both the EP and the single were very successful, the Japanese company Victor Entertainment signed a contract with Mamamoo, so that they released their first Japanese single “Décalomanie” in October 2018. In November 2018 their third EP “Blues” with the main single “Wind Flower” was released, followed by the last EP of the series “White Wind” in March 2019.
In November 2019, Mamamoo released their second full-length album entitled “Reality in Black”. The lead single from the LP, “Hip”, reached the fourth line on the digital chart and also reached the top of the Gaon album chart.
In 2020, they released the Japanese version of the album, including the Japanese “Hip” edition, and their third song in Japanese, “Shampoo”.
Winning the TV show “Queendom”
From August to October 2019, Mamamoo participated in the music show “Queendom” and competed for the top spot with such successful bands as Park Bom, AOA, (G)I-DLE, Lovelyz and Oh My Girl – the latter were the toughest competitor for Mamamoo . After several shows and a special Final Live Comeback Stages performance, Mamamoo won the show and together got more points than all the other music bands that entered the competition.
