“Bad vegan: fame. Fraud. Fugitives, Netflix’s latest crime documentary, currently airing on the streaming service, delves into one of New York City’s biggest fraud scandals. Sarma Melngailis and Anthony Strangis, lovers turned business partners who scammed investors and stole more than $1 million from Melngailis’ famed raw vegan restaurant Pure Food & Wine, are the focus of the documentary.

Who is Anthony Strangis?
According to a source in Vanity Fair, Anthony Strangis endured huge problems as a child, including seeing imminent fights between his parents and commuting between his parents’ homes after their divorce. Strangis married Stacy Avery after only a few months of dating as a young adult.
Avery claims that after becoming pregnant, Strangis told her he was “expected to inherit $5 million from an aunt” and then pawned all of her jewelry and electronics before abandoning her and their baby boy. Before meeting Sarma Melngailis, Strangis was in jail for impersonating a police officer and grand larceny, according to The New York Post.

Where is Anthony Strangis now?
Forbes reports that in March 2017, Anthony Strangis pleaded guilty to “four counts of fourth-degree grand larceny.” The charges include theft of $844,000 from investors and failure to pay $40,000 to 84 employees. According to the New York Daily News, Strangis was released from New York’s Rikers Prison in May 2017 after serving a year for his crimes and was sentenced to five years of probation.

Melngailis filed for divorce from Strangis in 2018 and he has remained off the radar since the affair. His five-year probationary period will expire in May 2022.
