Constance was raised an only child in Johnson City, by her father, who was an insurance agent, and her mother, who was a housewife – the family had just enough money to pay the bills and put food on the table.
Constance grew up with an interest in acting, but was urged by her parents to focus on her education. She graduated from high school in 1976, and subsequently enrolled at the University of Tennessee where she graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Theater. Constance then came to New York City and attended the Circle in the Square Theater School, not long after she decided to focus entirely on acting.
