Jose Manwell Reyes was born in Germany on June 28 – the exact year of his birth is not known, but his zodiac sign is Cancer and he now holds American nationality as his family moved to the US shortly after his birth. Manwell is a singerbut probably best known as the husband of American actress and comedian Anjelah Johnson.

Youth and education

Manwell was raised as an only child in the US by his German parents who emigrated to the US – his father worked in a local supermarket while his mother was a housewife.

Career as a singer

Manwell is best known as one of the three vocalists of the Christian hip-hop band Group 1 Crew. It was founded in 2003 by Manwell, Pablo Villatoro and Blanca Callahan, who were the band’s vocalists and rappers. In 2013, Blanca left after becoming pregnant, and several people joined the following year, including Sarah Sandoz (vocals), Lance Herring on guitar, Loren ‘Snoopy’ Clark on bass guitar, and Brian Ramey on drums.

The group released their debut extended play (EP) in 2006 entitled “I Have a Dream”, followed by “No Plan B (EP)” in 2007, the same year as the release of their debut album “Group 1 Crew”. Their second album “Ordinary Dreamers” followed in 2008, and their two EPs “Movin’ the EP” and “Spacebound” were released in 2009 and 2010 respectively. In 2010 they released their third studio album “Outta Space Love”, followed by their fourth album “Fearless” in 2012, while in 2014 two of their new EPs “#Faster” and “#Stronger” were released. Their latest album “Power” was released on July 29, 2016, after which the band broke up in 2017.

The group was nominated for nine Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards, winning five.

In 2008 and 2009 they won Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year, and in 2010 they won Rap/Hip-Hop Recorded Song of the Year for their single “Movin’”. They won two 2011 awards for Rap/Hip-Hop Recorded Song of the Year for “Walking On The Stars”, and Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year for “Outta Space Love”.

In 2009, he helped record the song “Firestarter” performed by KJ-52, and was subsequently featured on Chris August’s “Center of It (Remix)” and “FIRE” and “Walking on Air” by Press Play in 2012 In 2013 he worked with various musicians, such as Byron ‘Mr. Talkbox’ Chambers on “Party”, Anthem Lights on “All Around the World” and “As Long As You Love Me”, and with V. Rose on “Supernova”.

Manwell was also featured on Amanda Noelle’s song “Lights Out”, and some of his latest tracks include Jamie Grace’s “Just a Friend” and Manic Drive’s “VIP”, both of which were released in 2014 , and “Compass” by Jonathan Thulin recorded in 2015.

Manwell also tried to become an actor and in 2014 appeared in the comedy movie “Mom’s Night Out” starring Sarah Drew, Sean Astin and Patricia Heaton, about several women who go to a party while their husbands take care of their children. He then appeared in the drama film “Restored Me” in 2016, starring Steven Bauer, Will Yun Lee and Richard T. Jones, about an ex-con who joins a local movie theater and begins to believe in God again, before he finds out that his theater is not what he thought it was.

Manwell met Anjelah Johnson at one of his band’s 2009 gigs – they started talking at the club where he was performing, exchanged phone numbers, and went out on a date a few days later. Anjelah initially did not tell Manwell about her acting career, but wanted to wait to surprise him later. After two years together, the two married on June 11, 2011 in Half Moon Bay, California, in a grand ceremony with their wide circle of friends and entire family present, and spent their honeymoon in Europe. As Anjelah stated during an interview, the two don’t want children of their own, but might consider adopting in the future, and are currently content working on their careers and helping raise their cousins.
