Stephen worked at the Center for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge before he died, while also teaching mathematics at the same university from 1979 to 2009.

Stephen grew up with his two sisters, Philippa and Mary, and their adopted brother Edward Frank David in Oxford, by their father Frank and their mother Isobel Eileen Hawking. Stephen’s paternal great-grandfather was a wealthy man, but who made a mistake buying a huge farm that led to the bankruptcy of the family, saved by Stephen’s great-grandmother when she turned their home into a school.

Both Stephen’s parents had degrees from Oxford University, Frank worked as a medical researcher while Isobel was a secretary at a medical research institute.
