In honor of Pride’s 50th anniversary, the theme for the upcoming Pride month 2022 is “50 years of pride”.

It is difficult for me to speak on this subject because I am an Acisgender white female. Pride is a historical event that should not be overlooked, regardless of my personal beliefs. We hope our posts will provide members of the LGBTQ+ community with much-needed perspective on issues that continue to plague them. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. On June 28, 1969, police raided a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York City. Riots broke out for a week until July 3, when the LGBT community fought back. Between January and August 2021, approximately 15,000 homophobic hate crimes were committed. It’s no surprise that members of the LGBTQ community are more likely to suffer from depression, suicidality, and substance abuse than other groups.

Pride events are a great way to learn about LGBTQ+ issues and become an LGBTQ ally. Pride has turned into a marketing gimmick in some ways, especially for companies that want to “Rainbow Wash” by sticking Rainbow logos on their social media for the month of June. It started as a protest and it should stay that way. Its commercialization increases the risk of it losing its primary function. As a student you should be aware of LGBTQ+ issues as much as possible. A law cannot become law unless it is accompanied by good quality. The battle is won in the hearts and minds of the people, where the stakes are highest.
