Fortunately, it contains the occasional line that will convince you that the series can be racy and funny, like when Princess Anne learns that Tony Blair has offered a privately funded replacement for the royal yacht. “What do they imply?” she sighs. “Is McVitie’s cookies sponsored HMY Britannia?”
The series ends on a cliffhanger, as the director shoots a haunting scene of Diana’s terrified expression as she is chased by the paparazzi. The conclusion falls short of bringing everything together with a bang.
It’s a bit disappointing because it doesn’t reveal enough, like the playwrightPeter Morgan, has moved on to the serious development of Diana’s tragedy in season six.
