Because Shawn’s father was stationed in England when Shawn was young, the family lived there for two years. He was 12 years old when he decided he wanted to be a wrestler, and he first tried wrestling at his high school talent show. He was physically very active while attending Randolph High Schoolwhile playing football as a standout linebacker and eventually becoming the captain of the school team.

He began competing in World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) in January 1985, and toward the end of the year began wrestling for Texas All-Star Wrestling. He went national in 1986 when he entered the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and won a fight against Buddhakhan. In 1987, Shawn started fighting in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), but was fired after two weeks after a bar fight.

In 1988, he entered World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), eventually retiring ten years later due to a back injury. In 2000, he returned to fight at his own professional wrestling school, the Texas Wrestling Academy. In 2002, Shawn returned to WWE to compete for the next eight years, before becoming a wrestling coach in 2016. During his time in WWE, Shawn won the WWF Championship three times and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship once – he also won the Royal Rumble and the WWF Grand Slam Championship twice.

In 1987, Shawn became addicted to various substances he was taking, and this led to him losing many of his friends. Around that time, he contemplated suicide, but eventually went to see a psychologist — as Rebecca has stated, “There was something about him that he despised, and he was self-destructive.”
