Early life and family

Rhett was born on October 11, 1977, in Macon, Georgia, USA, to parents Jim and Dianne McLaughlin. He lived in Macon for the early years of his life, but in 1984 he moved with his family to Buies Creek, North Carolina.

While in the first grade at Buies Creek Elementary School, Rhett met his lifelong friend and partner in mischief, Link. The two were inseparable and were known to be very mischievous. In fact, the name of their YouTube channel is derived from an incident in elementary school.

After scribbling profanity on their desks, both Rhett and Link were held by their teacher, Mrs. Locklear, and given Mythical Beasts coloring pages to complete.

The same title is used today to describe their YouTube tribe of fans, all known as Mythical Beasts.

At a young age, they both showed a love for movies, and when they were 14, they wrote a screenplay together that they never finished. They were also part of a Christian punk rock band called “The Wax Paper Dogz”.
