Paul Michael Kennedy CBE FBA is a British historian specializing in the history of international relations, economic power and grand strategy. He is the author of several notable books on the history of British foreign policy and major power struggles.

Paul Kennedy Biography
Paul Kennedy grew up in Wallsend, Northumberland, and attended St Cuthbert’s Grammar School in Newcastle. He then graduated from Newcastle University with a first-class honors in history and received his Ph.D. from St Antony’s College, Oxford, under the direction of AJP Taylor and John Andrew Gallagher. Between 1970 and 1983 he was a member of the History Department at the University of East Anglia. He is a scholar of the Royal Historical Society and a former visiting fellow at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. Kennedy was the Phillipe Roman Professor of History and International Affairs at the London School of Economics from 2007 to 2008.
Career
- In 1983 he was appointed J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of British History at Yale. He is now the Director of International Security Studies, where he teaches the Studies in Grand Strategy course with John Lewis Gaddis and Charles Hill.
- Professor Kennedy began teaching “Military History of the West Since 1500” at Yale in 2012, expanding his view of military history as inseparable from economic power and technical progress.
- His best-known work, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, examines the relationship between economics and strategy over the past five centuries.
- Fellow historians praised the work, with AJP Taylor calling it “an encyclopedia in its own right” and Sir Michael Howard calling it “a truly humanistic book in the very best sense of the word.” It has been translated into 23 other languages.
- Kennedy explores the past and future of the United Nations in his 2006 book The Parliament of Man.
- He is on the editorial boards of various scientific publications and contributes to The New York Times, The Atlantic and numerous foreign-language newspapers and magazines. The Tribune Content Agency distributes its monthly column on current global concerns around the world.
- In 2010, he delivered the first Lucy Houston lecture on “Innovation and Industrial Regeneration” in Cambridge.
