On July 31, 2022, a man in Indiana allegedly got out of his car during a traffic stop and started the fire. As a result, Noah Shahnavaz, a young Indiana police officer, was killed. Noah Shahnavaz, 24, was an 11-month-old veteran of the Elwood Police Department and a five-year military veteran. Carl Roy Webb Boards II, 42, of Anderson, was detained and arrested in connection with the incident. According to Andrew Hanna, Madison County’s senior deputy prosecutor, Boards have been taken to Hamilton County Jail and will be charged with ordinary murder with a firearm.
Noah Shahnavaz is said to have stopped a 2012 Buick LaCrosse at the intersection of State Road 37 and County Road 1100 North around 2 a.m. Police have not released the cause of the traffic jam. Boards exited the Buick and fired six bullets, hitting Shahnavaz at least once before fleeing the area.

According to Elwood and Madison County authorities, Shahnavaz was injured in the event and efforts were made to save him until medical attention arrived. Soon after, Shahnavaz was taken to Ascension St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood before being transferred by helicopter to a hospital in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, he died as a result of his injuries.
Hamilton County Police Department officers found the Buick driving south on State Board 37 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Officers chased the Buick and used a tool to deflate the tires in the same spot. The truck was also driven to Interstate 69, where Fisher police used two “precise immobilization measures.” Reports say the car crashed into the median strip wall. Signs were later held. On Sunday, he was held without bail in the Hamilton County Jail.
Officials and citizens of Elwood mourn the loss of Noah Shahnavaz.
Mayor Todd Jones of Elwood noted that it is very difficult to find the right words to comfort Noah Shahnavaz’s family and community. He explained:
“A senseless act of violence has taken the life and career of this young man.”
Twelve hours after the horrific incident, several residents of Elwood and the surrounding area gathered in front of the Elwood Government Building shortly before a 2 p.m. press conference. Among them were Lindy Walker and Donna Williams.
According to Willems:
“All these agents are being killed. It’s heartbreaking. I hope this person is held accountable for what he did to the police. “The officer didn’t deserve to die like this.”
Another citizen, Bill Partlow, came from Frankton to express his grief. Bill was a former firefighter, while his brother, Shane Partlow, was a former deputy sheriff. Both were surprised by the encounter, saying in a statement:
“We are all brothers as first responders, whether we are retired or not. It’s really personal to all of us. We never expected this to happen here.”

On Sunday, an Elwood police officer was killed for the second time while on duty. Willard S. VanHorn was killed on July 1, 1932, while responding to a burglary.
