Although The Umbrella Academy, a previous Netflix hit, has made it to its fourth season, the show’s demise has not come without a cost. The Umbrella Academy Season 4 will only have six episodes, as previously mentioned. Compared to the previous three seasons, which each contained ten episodes and averaged fifty to sixty minutes, this is a radical change.
The show’s executive producer Steve Blackman acknowledged the move on Twitter, but he still promises entertaining episodes. Personal, I believe The Umbrella Academy may need a trim after the sluggish pace of the previous season. It is likely that Netflix trying to save money so they don’t order the full 10 episodes (10 hours) but this is better than canceling the program altogether (which is conceivable in the age of streaming, as evidenced by the cancellation of series like GLOW). The Umbrella Academy, unlike many Netflix shows, will have a good conclusion.
Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy was a step back from the first two seasons, which featured Netflix’s dark horse sleeper performers. As if that wasn’t bad enough, season 3 also had much lower ratings. Seasons 1 and 2 were both critically acclaimed (85% and 88% up Rotten tomatoes), but Season 3 was widely panned (55%). It’s not like there’s a concerted effort to flood review sites with negative feedback because of a particular issue (such as Elliot pagethe transition story for example). People just didn’t enjoy the season. This is something I wholeheartedly agree with. To put it bluntly, it was worthless.
Because occasionally shorter seasons have longer episodes to make up for the discrepancy, the length of these six episodes is unknown at this time. While I expect them to be standard length, this season will generally be shorter than the previous three.

That might be for the best, really. Still, all things considered, it’s a smart decision by Netflix to let The Umbrella Academy wrap up a story it’s been developing for three years. More series should get this chance, even if it means rearranging the order of the episodes. At least it’s not a cliffhanger of the magnitude of so many other too-quickly killed shows on the site. Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy could probably be shortened a bit, but we’re hoping for the best. The next year will give the answer.
