Mass shooting in Monterey Park… 9 dead during Lunar New Year festival

Sergeant Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Associated Press Sunday morning A mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, Saturday night left at least nine people dead and many more injured. People gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year when the shooting happened.

Photos and videos on the Citizen app, which allows people to report crimes in their neighborhood, show that the 120 block of West Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park, a city in Los Angeles County, was heavily policed.

Several police cars blocked an open area between a bank and a Chinese grocery store called TS Emporium. Saturday night W Garvey Avenue was packed with places to eat, shop and have fun.

That’s what the Monterey Park Fire Department said Fox News digital that there was a mass shooting, but they couldn’t say for sure how many people were injured. The Monterey Police Department has not yet commented on the shooting, but they said there will be a press conference at 7 a.m. PST.

A Citizen user said the shooting also hurt 16 people. The same was said by a Twitter account listening to the scanner of the local police: 16 people were injured. Officials in the area have not confirmed these numbers.

Boese said a shooter is male, but he didn’t say anything else to identify him. On Saturday night, many people gathered in the city to celebrate the Lunar New Year and the “Year of the Rabbit.”

According to the Monterey Park city government website, the Lunar New Year festival “features vendors offering unique gifts and specialty items, food stands with various types of delectable items, carnival rides, and plenty of live entertainment.”

The festival started on Saturday morning and had “a variety of entertainment,” according to the website. And: “There will be a carnival fun zone in parking lots at the corner of Garvey and Lincoln Avenue.”

It also said that in the past, Monterey Park’s Lunar New Year events have seen more than 100,000 people come from all over Southern California each day.
