Hardin flies to London with Tessa to attend his mother’s wedding, but upon his arrival discovers she is having an affair with her future husband. Christian is Hardin’s father Ken’s best friend, and he is also the man Trish is having an affair with. Christian and Hardin talk after the wedding, and Christian admits that he is Hardin’s biological father. Christian’s pregnant girlfriend, Kimberly, also tells Tessa.
Tessa expects Hardin to want her help, but he destroys his mother’s house in a fit of rage. Hardin is rescued by Christian, but afterwards he starts drinking excessively and begs Tessa to leave him alone.

Tessa returns to Seattle and has a talk with Kimberly, informing her that she is leaving for Seattle New York and start again. Ken and Hardin discuss how Hardin’s mother, Trish, has been keeping a secret from both of them about Hardin’s biological father, Christian. Ken insists that he will always regard Hardin as his son, regardless of the facts. Tessa, meanwhile, sees an obstetrician who informs her that given her health history, she has no chance of conceiving.
Tessa is devastated by the news that she will never be able to have children. She returns to Christian’s house, where she begins to drink heavily out of obvious distress. When Hardin calls her, he sees that she is not comfortable. When he enters the pool unconscious, he takes her home.
Tessa announces the news of her pregnancy the next morning. Tessa is frustrated as she feels that Hardin has no compassion for her. He expresses his regret to Tessa, and the two make up.

They go back to Landon’s house and settle in to catch up on their new life. Hardin has a nightmare on the couch when Tessa comes in. She comforts him as he falls asleep by lying down next to him on the couch. Tessa is disappointed the next day when Hardin is not there after she finishes her shift. Hardin catches up with her as she heads back to the house and they make the journey back together.
As Tessa and Hardin prepare dinner together that night, Tessa remarks that Hardin looks “different.” Tessa eventually finds a transcript of Hardin’s book and reads it from cover to cover a few days later. Tessa confronts him when he returns from meeting and accuses him of abusing her life and stories. During their argument, Hardin says he is sorry, as his intention was always for the manuscript to remain unpublished.

A bidding war has broken out for his book, he says, but Tessa is still angry that he invaded her privacy without asking. According to Hardin, their story teaches us about mercy and compassion. Despite her best efforts, she is unable to forgive him and cuts off communication with him. Hardin lands a book contract and his work is a huge hit with readers.
Hardin goes to a book reading event in New York, which Tessa finds out about. She walks in as Hardin and his publisher make eye contact. Hardin notices Tessa leaving without saying goodbye. A “To be Continued” screen appears at the end of the movie.
